Abstract

ABSTRAK - Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengindikasikan hubungan antara personality trait dan perceived social support pada mahasiswa. Pengukuran perceived social support menggunakan alat ukur Social Provisions Scale (SPS) yang dikembangkan oleh Cutrona dan Russel (1987) dan pengukuran personality trait menggunakan alat ukur Big Five Inventory-44 (BFI-44) yang dikembangkan oleh John (1990). Sebanyak 1024 mahasiswa dari berbagai perguruan tinggi di Indonesia berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian mengindikasikan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan positif antara dimensi extraversion, conscientiousness, openness, dan agreeableness dengan perceived social support; serta tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara dimensi neuroticism dengan perceived social support. Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa semakin tinggi kecenderungan mahasiswa untuk menjalin hubungan dengan orang lain, menolong orang lain, ramah, tekun, menyukai kegiatan yang kreatif dan tertarik dengan hal-hal baru, maka semakin tinggi pula mahasiswa tersebut dapat mempersepsi adanya dukungan sosial untuk dirinya.

ABSTRACT- This research is conducted to indicate the relationship between personality trait and perceived social support of college students. The measurement of perceived social support using Social Provisions Scale (SPS) which is compiled by Cutrona and Russel (1987) and the measurement of personality trait using the Big Five Inventory-44 (BFI-44) which is compiled by John (1990). A total of 1024 students from various universities in Indonesia participated in this study. The results indicated that there is significant positive correlation between personality dimensions that are extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeableness with perceived social support and there is no significant relationship between neuroticism dimension and perceived social support. This means that the higher the tendency of college students to establish relationships with others, helping others, being friendly, dilligent, interested in creative activities and interested in new things, the higher the student can perceive the support for himself.
